No other company is like Apple

April 05, 2010

I can think of no other company that inspires devotion and dedication like Apple.

Not too long ago I wrote about Mac fans who lined up for the privilege of purchasing their iPad on the first day it was available. People who willingly slept on the street for the opportunity.

Sleeping in line for an Apple iPad

You don’t see that level of obsession for many other companies. In fact, none come to mind. I mean, have you ever witnessed crowds of people camping out overnight for a Blackberry? Lining up in droves to purchase a Ford? Excitedly awaiting a new sandwich from Quiznos?

I know how Apple does it. I know because I was a Mac user for many years and still have a few iMacs kicking around. I also own two iPods and an iPhone.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs was recently named Marketer of the Decade. Any business would be ecstatic to have even 1/100th of the excitement and allegiance to their brand that his company does.

Pretty amazing stuff. And I’m not talking the computers.

Of course cults manage the same thing.  Want some Kool-aid?

I think the iPad thing dwindled out a little faster than the iPhone.  I saw a few articles that suggested that very soon in the morning it died out at virtually every retailer.  That said, marketing is Apple’s strong point.  I heard Jobs once say that their business plan counts on consumers replacing their mp3 player every 6 months to a year.  Don’t know if it’s common but I have owned 6 different iPods over the years as well as another 4 in the family.  I will say that out of the 6 I have bought, 4 still receive regular use.

Apparently over 300,000 iPads were sold on Saturday, April 3rd, so that may add up to 600-700K for the entire weekend. Conversely, it sounds like over 270,000 iPhones (the original version) were sold during the same period. Pretty impressive either way.

Do you use your iPod as much as your iPhone now? I don’t. My iPhone gets a lot more action all around.
