Follow your fears, not your dreams

May 7, 2015

When you choose to follow your dreams - to do something dramatically different than you are - you seek to live out an ideal. An ideal life, an ideal situation or perhaps an ideal relationship; something that you believe, based on assumptions, will be better than you what you have today.

Instead, perhaps you should be looking at this decision in a new way: Don't follow your dreams, follow your fears.

That is, do what scares you the most, then do it again and again. Challenge yourself when presented with the opportunity to make a choice: go ahead and pick the more difficult, uncomfortable and darkened path.

I say, speaking from experience, that following your fears - and one day, conquering those fears - ultimately can lead to a more fulfilling life than if you choose to simply follow your dreams and chase the ideal.
