Yukon campground reservation service

July 1, 2010

I want to build an online Yukon campground reservation service.

After yet another fruitless night of driving up and down our highways, searching desperately for any public campground with open spots, I believe it’s time for the Government of Yukon to invest in an Internet-based reservation system.

Yukon camping is wildly popular with tourists and residents alike. Given campground scenery like this is less than one hour from Whitehorse, it’s easy to see why.

The current method of campground occupancy/madness is drive your trailer out at least 2-3 days before you want to start camping, grab a spot, drop your trailer off and drive home; return days later to start camping.

I speak from experience: we’ve gone out early on a Wednesday morning only to discover that more than half of the spots are already taken. It will only get worse.

I’d like to see the government hire a local company - after all, I am a business owner and President of the Yukon Information Technology Industry Society - to create a service that allows people to pick an arrival date, choose a campground and book an available campsite. This is something that Government of Ontario has been doing for years, as has BC Parks.

I’m sure some will argue that doing so detracts from the Yukon frontier experience where it’s every man (and toddler) for themselves, but honestly, this whole Las Vegas style, campground lottery is a little ridiculous. Everybody should have a fair chance to enjoy what Yukon campgrounds have to offer.

It’s enough to make me want to buy a boat.
